Track 16: Current Issues in Occupational Health and Safety

The occupational safety and health status of the workforce is influenced by numerous variables; not least it’s changing analytical structure, the advancement of new technologies and a declination in the importance of economic sectors that initially dominated, such as industry and mining. This is bringing about transition not only in the numbers of jobs in every sector, but also the categories of jobs that are accessible. The workforce age profile is changing. New technologies are creating new league of employment.

Globalization implies that health threats that were once distant easily spread around the world in a short span. If these preserves the health of its workforce and manage its economic strength and its competitiveness, it needs to meet such challenges proactively. This Outlook provides an overview of the present and future patterns that are relevant to occupational health, the major workplace risks and their prevention.

Potential Growth Areas in Occupational Health

Why London, UK??

London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is a 21st-century city with history extending back to Roman times. At its centre stand the forcing Houses of Parliament, the iconic 'Big Ben' clock tower and Westminster Abbey, site of British monarch coronations. Over the Thames River, the London Eye perception wheel gives all-encompassing perspectives of the South Bank social complex, and the whole city.

In the greater part of the European nations males comprise the majority of workplace fatalities. In the EU all in all, 94% deaths were of males. In the UK the difference was considerably more noteworthy with males containing 97.4% of workplace deaths. In the UK there were 171 deadly injuries at work in financial year 2011-12, contrasted with 651 in calendar year 1974; the fatal injury rate declined over that period from 2.9 fatalities per 100,000 workers to 0.6 per 100,000 workers.

For the UK, the government organisation associated with occupational health has been the Employment Medical Advisory Service but in 2014 a new occupational health organisation - the Health and Work Service was created to offer advice and assistance to employers in order to get back to work employees on long-term sick-leave. The service funded by government, will offer medical assessments and treatment plans, on a voluntary basis, to people on long term absence from their employer; in return, the government will no longer foot the bill for Statutory Sick Pay provided by the employer to the individual.

Occupational Health and Safety Worldwide:

In USA an estimated 14,000 workers were killed at work in 1970– by 2010, the work power had multiplied, but workplace deaths were down to about 4,500 this information is compiled from workplace fatalities and non-fatal injuries in USA by The Bureau of Labor Statistics of United states Department of Labor. Somewhere around 1913 and 2013, workplace fatalities dropped by approximately 80%

In Malaysia, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) under the Ministry of Human Resource is mindful to guarantee that the security, health and welfare of workers in both public and private sector are maintained. DOSH is mindful to uphold the Factories and Machinery Act 1967 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

In Taiwan, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Ministry of Labor is accountable of occupational safety and health.  The matter is administered under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

In 2007 an official discharge the record TOSHMS (Taiwan Occupational Safety and Health Management System), which characterized the fundamental principle about occupational safety standard.

In India, the Labour Ministry defines national approaches on policies on occupational health and safety in factories and docks with exhortation and support from Directorate General of Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), and upholds it’s Policies via inspectorates of factories and inspectorates of dock safety.

In Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower works different checks and campaigns against risky and unsafe work practices, for example, when working at heights, operating cranes and in traffic management. Illustrations incorporate Operation Cormorant and the Falls Prevention.
